Handbag cake

Recently it was my sister in law's birthday and she loves all things girly, so I decided to make her a handbag cake.  Originally I was going to put gum paste shoes on it too; however, they were my first attempt at shoes and they crumbled as tried to move them.

Some quick thinking and I ended up with a Tiffany box and an iPhone to fill the gaps.

The cake inside the handbag was also zebra print - but pink and white - so looked awesome when cut open.

Needless to say, she enjoyed looking at it, and eating it!

Bride and Groom cupcakes

My mum had her wedding party a few weeks after the actual wedding, so that meant wedding cake round 2!

This time she opted for bride and groom cupcakes - in a teal/jade colour to match her dress.

They took a while, but I am pleased how they turned out - thanks to my new tools from my cake decorating mag!

Chocolate Wedding Cake

My Mum got married on the 13th of April and I was given the task of creating the wedding cake.  Mum decided on chocolate, so, courtesy of the humming bird bakery book, I made a Brooklyn Blackout cake (which is a rich chocolate cake with a custard type icing).

The custard stuff was a bit awkward as you have to whip the cornflour mixture and what happens when cornflour meets resistance...it appears hard!

Anyway, it turned out alright in the end and the cake was decorated with chocolate cigarillos and looked pretty good - I was pleased with the result and so was Mum.

It also tasted delicious - well, who doesn't love chocolate cake!

Fifi and the Flowertots - the final chapter...

So this weekend was my daughter's 2nd birthday and I made the Fifi Flowertot watering can cake.  I followed instructions as posted on 'Cakes by Lynz' and I must say I am pretty chuffed with the results.

It took me 2 days to make and once cut it was pretty much gone........all that hard work for a few moments pleasure!

Everyone said how good it was and I think I have outdone myself this time - what will my next challenge be?  You'll have to wait for the Easter cake to find out...

Fifi and the Flowertots Cake

Well, I decided to get a head start on the Fifi to go with the cake to save me one less fiddly job on the day.  I made this out of Sculpey (which is a modelling clay that you bake to harden).  This means that it can be kept as a little keepsake after the cake has been reduced to crumbs.

I must say I am looking forward to the challenge of making the Fifi watering can house cake...let the count down begin to the 16th!

Spitfire Cake

I wanted to post this on here as it is one of my proudest achievements.  It was a Spitfire cake, made to scale (well almost to scale), completely out of cake.

It was for my hubby's 30th birthday and he is a crazy plane enthusiast - needless to say he was interfering all the time ensuring the details were correct (which was secretly a help, but don't tell him that).  At the time I was 6 months pregnant, so I was knackered all the time anyway and this cake took me a good few (and sometimes very emotional) hours to make.

I was dead chuffed with how it turned out and everyone said how good it looked - hubby even posted it on his Air Fix modelling forum for feed back and it was a hit.  Shame all that was left  at the end of the party was a few measly crumbs.

Fifi Flowertot....

It is my little girl's 2nd birthday in a few weeks and I have been thinking about what cake to make her.  She is really into Fifi and the Flowertots at the moment (possibly because we call her Fifi for short), so I was browsing around for some inspiration and came across this tutorial:

http://www.cakesbylynz.co.uk/index.php/tutorials/how-to-make-the-fifi-and-the-flowertots-cake/

The cake looks amazing and the details are great, so I am going to give it a try.  I have already bought the bits and pieces needed and I am quite looking forward to the challenge.  I am sure it will take me a good few days, but I'll put some finished images on here after the 16th March...wish me luck!

It was Valentines day yesterday and these cupcakes went down a treat!

Baby Cakes

A friend at work is off on maternity leave and I wanted to make a special cake for her before she went.  I had some ideas in my head so drew a sketch and tried to think of all things baby related and this is what I finally came up with...

It took me hours to make, but I am pretty chuffed with the results.  The whole thing is edible as I made all of the little figures out of fondant.

I also made these cute little baby and teddy cakes that I had seen someone make before and wanted to have a go at - they came out pretty cute too.
